i am back from my trip to palm springs to be apart of the PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORT FEST & MARKET. i went with one goal in mind, to promote. to promote myself and my movie. i took a handful of dvd's to display along with two designs of postcards which can also be displayed. in a catalogue of over 3,000 films it was too hard to get my film chosen when you only get to watch 3 at a time. in a day and a half all of my dvd's were gone. this is excellent.

the website also received a ton of website hits, including a large amount of time spent on the website from someone in west hollywood. i would love to know who you are. mission accomplished.

i also wanted to meet some people during my time there. i met a handful of people, who none of which could help me in the future. it was too much of people promoting themselves and their movies to take a chance on someone else, but i expected that. i met some people from austin, and some from georgia, and i watched both of their movies and enjoyed them thoroughly. i also made it a point to check out my canadian competition and watch a couple canadian films. they were good. it has left me to wonder some things.

the best part for me during this trip was the seminars, or panels, if you will. i got to hear from alison kelly (cinematographer: the owls), frederick schroeder (cinematographer: destination wedding, nesting, barking water, fling, etc), david elliot (writer: four brothers), harris goldberg (writer: without a paddle, deuce bigalow, etc), david hayter (writer: x-men, x2, the scorpion king, watchmen), peter ignacio (producer), andrew crane (american cinemateque), penelope bartlett (chicago international film festival), paul sloop (cleveland international film festival), david nugent (hampton's international film festival), kim yutani (outfest and sundance film festival), beth barrett (seattle international film festival), claudette godfrey (sxsw), todd luoto (sundance film festival), sharon badal (tribeca film festival), gregg kilday (hollywood reporter), jeremy kay (screen international), steve pond (theWarp), pat saperstein (variety), anne thompson (formerly: variety, new york times, etc), david greenblatt (production company: greenlit creative (battle:LA)), brian kavanaugh-jones (production company: automatik (insidious)), april lim (agent: gaa), bec smith (agent: uta), peter trinh (agent: icm), and miles levy (producer). i could not have been more overwhelmed by information than i was during this couple of days. they opened my eyes and my mind to 'the business' on both the studio level and the independent level. i took away a full brain and a full note pad. on the last day (sunday) during a brunch we were delighted by jon bloom (chair: short films and feature animation branch for the academy of motion picture arts and sciences), and terry george (director: hotel rwanda). kathleen mcinnis (palm springs international shortfest) also gave a speech and between the three of them i could not be more motivated than i am now. i went back to the hotel and touched up a couple of scripts and really got right back into it.

it was a memorable experience and i hope to get there next year not as a market attender, but as a filmmaker making my world premier.

at the end of this month i will be attending the palm springs international film festival marketplace to promote myself and my short film 'of heart and limbs'. although we were not selected for competition we were still invited to be apart of the marketplace, and this is an opportunity that i am not going to pass up. this is an exciting time for myself and hope to meet some really good people but already this trip is going to be a positive. this is going to also be a learning experience for myself and i cannot wait.

i would like to give a huge shout out to my mom & dad. without them i would not be where i am today and i cannot express how much i love them. no matter when things go wrong or right they are always there to cheer me up and provide advice that no one else can give. i love you guys very much.

keep an eye on twitter and the facebook page for updates during my time there, and most of all, wish me luck.

it has been just over a week since i have received my film from toronto and as each day passes it is growing more and more clear that the film we shot is unusable and therefor will be left on the cutting room floor as they say. this is super disappointing to me given how much work was put into it but, these things happen. there is one option which would include a total re-shoot but i am not exactly in favour of that idea. so it is with great sadness to put to rest the december short film 'portrait'. during the process i've had the great pleasure of communicating with one of my favorite bands 'the vivian girls' in hopes to use on of their songs which they were on board for. unfortunately we will not be collaborating this go around, but fingers crossed for the future. i would highly recommend checking them out and buying their music & going to shows if they are in your town.

february 18 2011

the film for 'portrait' has arrived today at byron's office. this is exciting news since it has been two months since we shot the film. but because of the holidays the film place wasn't opened to send to and so on and so forth. now that it has arrived the editing process can begin. stay tuned!
